As I reflect on 2024, I have been thinking a lot about choices I have made and where those choices have led me. Years ago, I took a three-day self-actualization course, during which one of the leaders said that feelings like being happy or sad, angry or pleased are really a choice – like choosing chocolate or vanilla ice cream. At the time, I didn’t get it; in fact, it made me a little (okay, a lot!) irritated.
But as I have gotten older, I have come to realize this is one of life’s actual truths. I cannot always choose my circumstances, nor can I control what others do, but I can control my response and, in acceptance, control how I feel. The sense of power and peace I have gained from embracing this has changed everything.
Don’t get me wrong, I still jump the other way and have to self-correct sometimes, but it happens less and less as I practice. And the result? I am so much happier and peaceful.
If this idea pisses you off, trust me I get it!! But I also encourage you to try it and see how it works for you. The next time you are frustrated or disappointed, just choose to be calm or happy in spite of it. The holiday season is a perfect time to practice! Let me know how it goes!!
P.S. I wanted to remind you about my yearly December practice called What Went Right This Year. HERE is the link to my newsletter last year explaining what to do. It has been a complete game-changer for me, and I hope it will be for you too!
Happy holidays and can't wait to see you all in 2025!
xo,
Lauren
