Miriam Webster Dictionary has several definitions for “honeymoon”. First, a period of harmony immediately following marriage, or a period of unusual harmony especially following the establishment of a new relationship, and lastly a trip or vacation taken by a newly married couple. I also read somewhere that they call it honeymoon due to the sweetness of the nights that pass when you are deeply in love or falling in love. Honeymoon phases can be with our partners of course, but also with new jobs or friends or even where we live, etc.
I definitely feel like I am in the honeymoon phase of my LIFE. Lately, I have been pinching myself to make sure my days, relationships, job, etc are actually real. What a joyous time--I am savouring every moment of it. What I don’t like is how the word/definition of honeymoon suggests that it is not forever, or even long lasting. Is that really true? I like to believe that when we put in the work (the deep, time consuming, all encompassing WORK) that we can have it ALL. And, isn’t it true that gratitude is a path towards that end? In Al-Anon we have a saying that “we can find happiness whether the alcoholic is still drinking or not” which I parlay to being happy even if everything is not going the way I think it should or wish it would.
Coming down off the wedding and then jumping into an absolutely incredible two week honeymoon in Ireland, I’ve settled into a wonderful serene life here in the South Bay. I hope you are experiencing a honeymoon with something in your life—a new pet, a grandchild, a workout routine, a fresh friendship, a healthy habit…if you are, let me know about it!!
Stay well!
